In the Creative industry, it’s taboo to talk about money. We are at a point where we automatically demonise and brand someone who is money-conscious as “greedy” or “materialistic.” I fully agree that being motivated by money is an absolutely evil thing. But it’s important for us Advertising Creatives to learn new things. We study a new computer program, a new editing tool, kerning, calligraphy, etc. But we usually deny ourselves the study of money matters, or business. Do you know how much a static FB post costs? If it’s animated, how much is it? How much is the monetary value of the logo that you crafted last week? How much is that one-pager strat? It’s not about greediness, it’s just knowing the facts and putting context to things. Financial literacy is also a skill that we should learn. Too sad that most of the time, Creatives conferences/talks are all about the technicals, the crafting, the trends, the awards, etc., but no one really talks about the business. Maybe because the least thing creatives want is to breed creatives who start their own small shops? I don’t know. But one thing I do know: learning new things is always important.
Remember, there’s an #ADternative .
“Be hungry”, a very popular phrase today. Usually treated as a catalyst for success. Used by many bosses to motivate their employees. Yeah you can jump on this popular mentality but remember there’s an #Adternative - gratitude. Gratitude for having a job in a sea of unemployment will push you to do excellently. The gratitude for having talents will make you want to share that gift to others. If you make your employees realise how blessed they are- they will give their best. In this mindset, success is not the goal but will definitely attract it. . Let me end by saying thank you to the one who gave me the opportunity, the talents and this new mindset- my Lord and my savior Jesus Christ. All glory belongs to Him. Will be forever thankful. Help me to be a good steward of the things you have given me.
Posting your work online? Why? Self promotion? Or to promote what service or gifts you can share to others. The act of posting online looks Superficially the same but can be fundamentally different. Motivation matters. #ADternative
So sad that the prevailing voices in the AD Industry believe that the only way to know the value of an ad is to compare it with others. Breeding “Comparative” & “Competitive” Young Creatives instead of “Objective” Ad people. Remember, there’s always an #ADternative 👍
Basic principle we teach our kids. Showing of talent/s is not about advancing your reputation, career, getting awards, guarding your family’s financial status etc. Its all about saying thank you to the talent Giver by sharing it with others. .
How a creative’s worldview affects motivation. Believer of the “survival of the fittest” and “we are all just products of random chances” will definitely fight (or kill) for identity & value. Too bad that the ad industry is continuously bombarded with this creative political ideology. Remember, there is an #ADternative 😉
