I do love a good P90x class! .
During 45 minutes of teaching I burnt 686 kcal’s. Add onto that the after-burn from EPOC and we’re talking big numbers.
After an intense workout our metabolism is raised for 24-48hrs. This is referred to as Excess Post-Exercise Oxygen Consumption (EPOC).
This means when I’m resting and sleeping tonight my body will be burning more calories than usual.
How much more depends on 2 things;
1 - INTENSITY
2 - DURATION of intensity
Its important to understand that Intensity is a subjective measure. What is intense to me might be easy to the next person. .
As a beginner I wouldn’t expect anyone to keep the intensity for too long...you do what you can...but as we get fitter we can work hard longer. .
The fitter and stronger we get the more benefit we get from EPOC.
So next time your struggling in a workout remember that the benefits last far beyond the workout itself.
