1999/ 2005 Champagne Blanc de Blancs.
Once I opened the bottle of 99 Diebolt-Vallois and seen wine’s light colour I understood this will be a cracking bubbly. Cork was in pristine quality. This champagne, as many other 99s, is now at its peak. Rich aromas of figs, dates, apple puree, hazelnuts and lilies. Very generous yet fresh. I did not sniff any honey, nectar or crème brûlée that with age sometimes overcame the complex bouquet of champagnes. Only the slight bitterness does not allow me to put this into the category of greatness. Ex-cellar bottle from one of the best Cramant estates. Storage matters.
05 Bérêche champagne Côte is produced solely from Avize Grand Cru, village where Selosse and Agrapart are both based. Just 4000 bottles made. Spent 11 years on the lees making the colour look deep too. This tasted very fresh for 05. I didn’t sense brioche nor dried fruit, just lightly toasted feel. Cult grower’s wine was rewarding with scents of apricot, peach and a wonderful sea salt aftertaste. It can still go for 10 years. One of the 2005s with biggest future.

Last night, the shining stars of South Africa’s restaurant industry were honoured at the 2017 @eatoutguide Mercedes-Benz Restaurant awards at Grand West in Cape Town. This year the chefs from the 30 nominated restaurants were given the opportunity to vote for a champion chef amongst their peers and the winner of the inaugural Eat Out Graham Beck Chefs’ Chef Award is Kobus van der Merwe of Wolfgat in Paternoster. Here he is photographed with South Africa’s favourite songbird, @karen_zoid. Congratulations Kobus and all of the winners, we’re raising a glass to you all! .
