Plates, thrown on the kick-wheel, but in a way I’ve never done before. Scroll through the photographs to see how they’re made. Ken Matsuzaki showed me this technique and I’ve been sat at the wheel since making hundreds in three different sizes. This is only the first part to their creation, once leather hard the outer flange is faceted using a sharp gouge.
Throwing plates on a kick-wheel normally, even with very soft clay, would be pain. The coning up and down and flattening out would be arduous as the amount of pressure used to do so would mean the wheel would constantly need to be kicked to keep it spinning. Instead, a block of clay that’s roughly the diameter of the base of the plate is wedged up and cut into slices using wooden slats and a wire. After each cut one of the slats is removed until you’re left with a dozen or so bases. These are then attached to then wheel-head, which I wet beforehand so it sticks, the sliver of clay is roughly centred, compressed greatly, measured and the excess cut away. A coil of very soft clay is worked around the edge of the base and thrown into a thick rim to my tombos measurements. This is likely the hardest part but having soft clay is critical as the coil then easily conforms to the piece of wet chamois I compress around it, centring it properly. The flange is left thick as it will be faceted the day after. Lastly the outside of the pot is scraped clean of slip and shaped before being wired off. As the pressure of sliding a taut wire beneath the pot whilst also pushing down against the wooden wheel to make sure it remains straight is so strong, the final spin and cut off must be done with quite some gusto.
It’s an interesting technique for making flatware that doesn’t have foot-rings, although you could if you simply used thicker slices at the beginning. It’s fast too, eliminating all the coning and centring saves considerable time but making sure the base is compressed is a must, I did have a few crack on me. All the components are prepared before hand, the coils and bases and it’s like assembly, rather than making it from scratch. I’ll post the next stage these undergo in a few days, so keep an eye out for that.
