When is the last time you touched something living (aside from a person)? A tree, a plant, grass? What about other natural elements (sand, rocks, a lake or river)? In the summer months, this isn’t as much as a gap in these moments (in the winter, you could easily go a month or more in the city without touching something that is alive). Living in the city, there can be surprisingly large gaps between that kind of contact even in the summer.
The research that is out there is in-depth and dynamic about all of the positive effects on your health, mind, stress levels and emotions that come from being in contact with natural and living elements. The adverse is also very real – there are negative effects that come from a void in that area of your life.
This topic came up for me three times in 24 hours. The first was in the editorial from Tyler Brûlé in the new issue of #Monocle magazine, where he speaks about the profound impact he sees the green space has on victors touring their headquarters in London. They enter office floor and see an eye-level, expansive view of the park that is beside their building; it draws them in.
The second instance was in a conversation was about having plants in a space and how much they offer to an on-going sense of well-being when you take care of them (between the two us, we both had pretty high body-count of plants on our hands). The third time it came up was a conversation about making some contact with nature as a part of a daily routine and that there is exponential returns on extra 10-20 minutes it takes to cut through a park or veer off to your nearest body of water.
In the short-term, mid-term and long-term, you will notice a difference.
