West Bed, our westernmost grow bed with a trellis built from chainlink fenceposts, awaits more tomato planting in the spring. A few indeterminate tomato plants already grow there. Any suggestions on what to grow next to our tomatoes? #sillygardener#domicilian
Bamboo poles: construction material growing in our front yard. We believe this is Golden Vivax bamboo. My son purchased it a few years ago from a grower in Davis and it's doing very well! Golden Vivax is characterized by its yellow culm and green stripes. These can grow 70 ft tall but ours are about 15 ft. It gives us a little privacy from the street and provides shade for our hybrid cars. #sillygardener#domicilian
Lulu our 5 year old, patrols the front-yard garden. Here she is admiring the new plants we purchased. Some are looking a bit drab because we got them a few weeks ago and left them unattended. Let's hope they survive this California winter!
Hosing clean our metal queen size bed frame over the compost pile to make dual use of the water. The composting process requires constant moisture. No moisture, no compost. I hope everyone's compost pile is healthy and well!
We 💙 bamboo!
I found this shirt @goodwillofsv I chose it because the sleeves offer a bit of sun protection while I'm in our garden and it was only $1! It would be fun to meet the previous owner. The bamboo in our front yard needed some trimming and this piece reminded me of a small Christmas tree.
This espaliered semi-dwarf citrus tree finally bears fruit after 2 years of idly feeling its roots post-transplantation.
Espalier is horticultural art which involves pruning and training a tree or shrub to grow flat against a support, creating a living sculpture. We have a trellis in front of our windows to keep the fruit trees in a neat plane. Small space calls for intricate horticulture practices. #sillygardener#domicilian
Central Bed was built 4 years ago. It was originally filled with store-bought potting mix combined with compost, sand, and local soil. It has produced artichokes, squash, Swiss chard, and herbs. We're starting a compost pile on top that can later be moved to another location for finishing. #domicilian#sillygardener
Companion planting of bell pepper and bamboo works well. The mint was snuffed by the overbearing bamboo. This bell pepper started as a seedling from @orchardsupply and has produced a few harvests. #domicilian
Eating the Grapes of Sloth.
Some fruit from the neglected plants aren't pretty but we still consume them. If they've gone bad we throw them in our "forgettable composter." #domicilian#sillygardener
Lavandula Dentata! Lavender has a low-water requirement, which makes it popular in xeriscape applications. It also diffuses a lovely scent and can be used for cooking or aromatherapy. We are going to put this one in our "forgettable planter." We found this potted variety at Yamagami's Nursery for $12. Do you have a lavender plant as well?
The last cherry tomato harvest of the season! We started from seedlings purchased at @orchardsupply for 99 cents ea. They kept supplying us with fruit over the summer and into the fall. We grew them in raised beds that contained a combination of potting mix and local soil. #domicilian#sillygardener
Hello fellow earthlings!
Let's try to preserve this earth of ours for our children and children's children. I will share with you some of the random things I've learned from other people that may help us achieve that goal. I will also throw out some of my own ideas that may be helpful or silly! Take them for what they're worth. #domicilian#sillygardener
