Breast milk and obesity!!
In addition to the high risk of pregnancy complications related to maternal obesity, recent studies have reported that obesity (BMI of 30 or above) is also associated with a delay in lactogenesis (production of breast milk) within three days of delivery. Breast-feeding can be a difficult task for all mothers; it is even harder for those who were obese prior to pregnancy. This has potential consequences on newborns, who may lose more weight during initial days after birth and end up on formula feeding.
For the multiple health benefits of breast milk for both the mother and her baby, it is hence important to encourage them to continue trying to breast-feed for longer. It is also well evidenced that even a small amount of breast milk will provide some benefits for the babies.
