16. Today’s Artist is Le Corbusier
Charles-Edouard Jeanneret known as Le Corbusier 1887 – 1965
The Swiss-French Architect, designer and painter had a creative career that lasted 5 decades with buildings and furniture designs spanning the globe with commissions from Japan, Europe, India, North and South America, he was very influential in urban planning and his work received many accolades with his UNESCO sites receiving ‘Outstanding Contribution to the Modern Movement,
Born in Switzerland, he became a French citizen in 1930. At the age of 15 he attended the Municipal Art School at his home town of La-Chaux-de Fonds which taught the arts and watchmaking. Like many architects he had no formal training in the discipline but taught himself from books observations. In 1905 at the age of 18 he designed his first house, a villa in his home town; by 1912 he was designing dozens of buildings, one for his parents The Maison Blanche. During the WW1 he taught theoretical architecture at his old school and experimented with reinforced concrete which was to be an influential building material for many of his future projects. When ww2 came around he was trying to promote his designs to the Vichy and plans for the rebuilding of Algiers, but they were rejected. The 50s and 60 were a lean and difficult time for him, he lost his wife in 1960 and this deeply affected him as they were very close. In 1965 against doctor’s orders he went for a swim in the Mediterranean, and he was found dead on the beach, he had suffered a heart attack.
He was responsible for many iconic buildings from houses to monasteries but I think the design that got me interested in his works is his Chaise LC4. Originals in cow hide still fetch £4000...maybe just maybe!

On 14 January 1898 Lewis Carroll, the British author of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking-glass, died. Carroll passed away five months before Escher was born. Although their lives didn't intersect, the author and the artist have a lot in common. Both were frighteningly thin, both were addicted to lang walks, both were obsessed by documenting their daily life, both were mad about chess and intrigued by game elements and using these in their work. Escher was fascinated by the mirrors and the toying with perspective in the Alice books. Scientific journalist Martin Gardner, author of The Annoted Alice, brought the two together. Escher corresponded with him about mathematical elements in his work and the similarities with Lewis Carroll.

Wow so much true. That is exactly what I feel about Brussels. Brussels is a multiplicity without rhythm and that equals to chaos. I learnt this Escher quote in Lisbon. But Escher although was dutch he lived in Brussels in 1938. And people from Brussels haven’t learnt anything from him... wow. #escher #chaos #brussels #bruxelles #lisbon #lisboa
