Sunset over the golden dome. Mt Fushan looms beyond.
The question gets repeatedly asked: "How are you settling in?" Like many expat/transitional queries—where is home? how long will you be ____? what's it like living where you are?—there's rarely a simple answer.
But like most lives anywhere on Earth, the days come and go with predictable regularity. There are good days, bad days, and the more numerous average, everyday days.
Settling in feels a bit like that. Some days it feels like you're wearing a crocodile coat on inside out, like the seams chafe and nothing fits quite comfortably. Some days are just...life, as it is in its everyday glory. But some days you follow the road up to find sunsets of gold, and an answering warmth inside confirms: for this moment, you are *exactly* where you're supposed to be.
RIP Jaegar Jungle Shirt. We have been together for many years. Your raw silk kept me cool in Asia, and warm in Europe. I have loved you and cherished you. I had your sleeves shortened so that I had spare cloth to repair you. But now the time has come to say goodbye. 😞❤️ "We are all Adam's children, but silk makes the difference" Thomas Fuller.
