I recently had the opportunity to take part in an Indigenous Awareness Training workshop as part of an AFLPA Player Development course, and it was amazing! It shocked me to learn and relearn what Indigenous Australians have gone through and, sadly, still go through. It also reminded me again of how little I know about Indigenous Australian history and culture.
To be honest, since I was 19 one of my most favourite days of the year has always been Australia Day. Basically, I enjoyed having some drinks with my best mates and listening to Triple J Hottest 100 Countdown, without thinking anything of the real significance of the day. But I have thought much more about it since the changing of the date of Australia Day has been a hot topic in recent years. While I’ve been lying in a pool, 15 beers deep, singing an MGMT banger at the top of my lungs, Indigenous Australians all around the country have been enduring a day of mourning, for the shameful mistreatment of this country’s Aboriginal people; invasion, dispossession and genocide.
There are different opinions, arguments and reasons about the topic of changing the date of Australia Day. But at the end of the day, if our Indigenous Australians are saying that celebrating Australia Day on January 26th is extremely disrespectful and is a major source of pain and anguish, then let’s listen to them and change it! Although Australia Day will still be celebrated on January 26th this year, I believe that changing the date of the countdown is a step in the right direction!
Australia Day should be a day where we can come together as a country and celebrate what we are; a wonderfully diverse, open and free society.
I hope you enjoy your Australia day this year and enjoy the countdown the day after!
