Spending all the evenings this week here. In my happy place. Messiah opens tonight. The music, and the story, are so magnificent that sometimes I can hardly catch my breath. Our guest conductor lives and breathes the music, and is a lesson in fully giving yourself to the story. And the soloists are extraordinary: a true contralto whose warm, rich tones are sublime, a beautifully expressive soprano whose miraculous sixteenth notes float like birdsong, a bass whose deep resonance you feel in your chest, and a tenor who makes it all seem effortless. There are still a handful of seats left. You should come. 🎶 #nashvillesymphony#nashvillesymphonychorus#messiah#handel
The best Messiah I’ve had the pleasure to see and hear. What a lush, glossy arrangement! Many thanks to the @edmontonsymphony and specifically Alexander Prior for a memorable performance! 💖 #yegdt#music#handel @winspearcentre
My viewpoint from the full orchestra rehearsal of Handel's Messiah with the @torontosymphony and @tmchoir. Matthew Halls brings a very exciting and inspiring interpretation to this classic work so this year's run of Messiah is sure to be a special treat!
JOY TO THE WORLD! This beloved Christmas carol was penned (as a poem based on Psalm 98) in 1719 by Isaac Watts. 22 years later, George Frederick Handel composed "Messiah". Nearly a century after that, an American publisher named Lowell Mason found Watts poem and wanted to publish it - but had no music. Upon searching, Mason came upon a beautiful melody in Handel's "Messiah"; so he set Watts poem to Handel's music and what we know & sing today as #JoyToTheWorld was born!
