I’ll like to share a #ThyroidThursdayTip that I’ve learned while on my own autoimmune healing journey: Chronic adrenal stress can affect communication between the brain and glands that produce hormones, weaken the immune barriers of the gut, lungs, and brain and weaken the immune system. When my autoimmune body suffers from a cortisol imbalance, my thyroid functions even less efficiently than it already has trouble dealing with. Hashimoto’s disease is where the immune system attacks the thyroid and your thyroid produces hormones that regulate the body's metabolic rate as well as heart and digestive function, muscle control, brain development and bone maintenance. That being said, stress management is important to me! ☝🏼 Thus, I use adrenal adaptogens such as @NaturesWayBrands Rhodiola to help support my body’s balance its stress response. TERIYAKI CAULIFLOWER BOWL 🎍 watch out y’all, @milkandeggscom produce coming in HOT. i created this recipe over the weekend and had to make it again because woooof this cauli is OUTTA DIS 🌎!
paired it with some meal prepped sweet potatoes, baby bok choy, mushrooms, and lots of greeeens for lunch yesterday. if you haven’t seen in my stories, i accidentally ordered 4+ bags of baby bok choy so i’ve been eating it constantly for the past two weeks now 😂

I've been reflecting on my use of social media this past week... in the sense that I haven't been posting much and not because I'm unmotivated & depressed which is usually the case, but because I'm busy GETTING SHIT DONE!  Of course I knew social media was a distraction, but it really is amazing how much more focused I am when I'm not taking time to take pics and write these captions and then respond to comments (and check likes because, duh, I'm human and desire approval like everyone else!). I've thrown myself back into SGN full force, partly because I am way behind due to the trauma & missed time looking for my lost pup, and partly because I'm sick of feeling sorry for myself and keeping busy keeps my mind off of how much I miss him.  I've been cooking for @longtablegrocery, recipe testing, tackling inventory, getting organized for taxes, setting targets, planning & executing marketing strategies and meeting with collaborators (planning for the @discoverwellnessbc Health Fair kicks off today!). So yes, I'm still here, I'm okay. Some days are better than others, but I'm channeling my energy into positive pursuits and exercise - yay! Hope you all are having a lovely and productive week 😙

Cozy vegan, gluten & oil free mac and cheese because I don't believe in off limit foods--I believe in finding ways to make it more whole plant food based to fit your neeeeds. ⋆
Food innovation also makes it possible for people with allergies, intolerances and dietary restrictions to eat the same foods everyone else does. (The only thing I'm still waiting on is a vegan AND gf croissant 🥐)

RECIPE: 1 cup white potatoes, diced - 1/4 cup carrots, diced - 1/3 cup plant milk (I use @ripplefoods original) - 1/4 cup nutritional yeast
- 1 tbsp tahini - 1 tsp lemon juice - 1/2 tsp white miso - 1/2 tsp garlic powder - 1/2 tsp onion powder - salt to taste - smidge of white pepper ⋆
Boil carrots and potatoes until soft enough to poke a fork through easily. Add to a blender with remaining ingredients and blend until fully smooth. Adjust sauce thickness by adding plant milk as needed and spice to taste. #veganmacandcheese #dairyfree

Made @lilsipper butternut squash fudge last night! I added some vegan mini chocolate chips for some sweetness as this recipe only has 4 ingredients: Butternut squash (duh), coconut oil, @vitalproteins beef gelatin, and organic cacao powder. No added sugars or sweeteners of any kind! I might try to pop it in the freezer to firm it up a bit more but besides that the taste was on point! Love the sneaky veggies in there, can't even taste them one bit.

Full disclosure, in the past I've had some anxiety over eating out at certain restaurants and some of their shady ingredients (junky oils are unfortunately the norm). But when it comes down to it, you just gotta live your life, make better choices when you can, and not sweat over things you can't control. And when you're on a #21DSD, you bring your own salad dressing to Disneyland. And eat a giant Italian salad. The end.

Sweet flavors of coconut and lime fused with tumeric and fresh jalapeño, added some shrooms and sprouts for an earthy taste/texture.

Turmeric Asian-Fusion Black Rice Noodle Pasta (..for now 🤷🏽‍♀️)

Ingredients:
Black Rice Noodles
Spinach
Mini Jalapeño Pepper
Onions 
Mushroom
Sprouts
Like
Organic Virgin Coconut Oil
Tumeric
Garlic
Soy Sauce

1) Coat shrooms/onions/sprouts in coconut oil, tumeric & garlic powder, and soy sauce. (Bake for 15 mins at 180C/350F)
2) Cook and drain black rice noodles. Lightly coat with coconut oil and spritz with fresh lime. 
3) Sauté your jalepenos (the less cooked the more spicy. I like it hot 😋
4)Add spinach to the pan for a light sauté. 
5) Mix all your veggies and noodles together. Spritz with lime. 
6) Eat

wowowow it’s been a busy week! mostly filled with cooking projects thus far, which has been really fun and really time consuming. although i’ve been running around to get everything done, i’ve still made it a priority to eat balanced, nutritious meals to keep that engine running. so thought this would be a good time to talk about yet another amazing thing our food does for us. have you heard of amino acids? amino acids are the building blocks of proteins, which are required for our bodies to function, and they are made from carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen, and oxygen. there are twenty common amino acids, and nine of these are considered essential amino acids. essential amino acids must be obtained from our food, because our bodies do not produce them on their own. our muscles, organs, cells and tissues are made up of amino acids, sooo if we don’t nourish our bodies properly with these building blocks, guess what? the damn block is gonna break. moral of the story: we’re all really fuckin busy all the time. that’s life (today). but, if you want to keep doing the things you love, producing quality work, spending time with loved ones, etc., you gotta give the bod what it needs. a complete protein is a food that has all essential amino acids contained within it. a food that doesn't have all nine essential amino acids is known as an incomplete protein. complete proteins are found in animal products, soy, (which i do not recommend - more on that another time) and you can also form a complete protein by combining grains and legumes. many people also supplement with amino acids. how are you getting yours today??

So what can we do about it? I have posters all around my room, in particular by mirrors, that remind me of my individuality and self worth. I am so much more than the negative thoughts that bombard me at times. Making motivational posters has made me less afraid of mirrors and of outside perceptions and judgments. With the start of the new year I’ve been trying to find sacred in the simple things, the most impactful being my morning ritual. I recently purchased a dry brush after learning how this underestimated tool packs a punch when it comes to health benefits. I’ve been enjoying it first thing in the morning as I’m oil pulling (I’ll post more on that later). Basically I start brushing the parts of my body that are furthest away from my heart. Working in small upward movements I gradually make my way towards the heart (so working downwards from the neck)..

Dry brushing encourages new cell renewal, promotes smoother and brighter skin, improves blood circulation, lymphatic drainage; therefore decreasing cellulite and spider veins. And it only takes five minutes!.

After I’m complete I’ll seal my ritual by anointing myself with pure organic coconut oil infused with a couple drops of Frankincense (you could use any favorite oil). I value knowing exactly what I’m putting on my body (no mystery ingredients or harsh fragrance here) and my skin feels so soft and rejuvenated when I’m finished! I love my Frankincense not only for the skin promoting benefits, but it also is so relaxing and soothing. What are some of your favorite ways to utilize oils in your beauty routine?

my first symptom—and one of the most traumatizing for me—was my hair loss.
i always had thick, waist-length hair.
that all crumbled in ONE day back in July 2015, when i lost half of it suddenly one morning. suddenly. it just fell off.
no words could describe the SHOCK.
you could see very visible bald streaks on my head and worse, when i looked back into the tub (which is where it fell), i saw a BED of my long, curly hair.
doctors recognized the odd hair loss pattern, but couldn’t explain it. and i panicked. a lot.
i tried EVERYTHING—oils, shampoos, natural remedies—but nothing worked. in fact, not only were clumps falling out DAILY, but my hair texture changed COMPLETELY. it was brittle and dry, and broke off all.the.time.
i was miserable.
up until that point, hair for me was a given—something i saw CONSISTENTLY, every single day. it was a huge part of who i was—and you know this especially if you’re a black woman.
needless to say, when i found my way to health, getting my hair back was one of the ways i found PURE, unadulterated JOY.
joy, y’all.
like i said, it took 3 months to get there, but i SAW the progress. I’d break down in the shower when i noticed new growth or a reversion to my original texture—when i felt it get soft and bouncy again.
and now, by the grace + power of the Almighty, i have a FULL head of hair again, and the chance to see it thicken and thrive.
the hair you see on my head today is mostly new growth.
i can’t possibly be anything but grateful.

[sleep nutrition] sleep is something I’ve struggled with since a young age. I watched my siblings fall asleep in two seconds and stay asleep through the night, and I would be tossing and turning and woke up at the drop of a pin. I’ve always been envious of those who can fall asleep anywhere and routinely get a good night’s sleep.

In recent years, however, I’ve been able to connect more and more of the dots surrounding my shitty sleep patterns. One of the big ones that is in my control, and the one that seems to have the greatest impact, is what and whether I eat just before bed. Especially when my body is feeling run down. Given that I predominantly partake in high intensity exercise (although I’ve been toning that down), carbs before bed are really calming to my body and I fall asleep much more quickly. This usually comes in the form of a bowl of cereal made with chocolate almond milk👌🏻

This is especially true on days when I workout, such as yesterday. While laying in bed, my heart rate was elevated, and while my body was tired, I felt completely wired. I decided to get up and have that bowl of cereal, and sure enough, I was asleep within 5 minutes!

People often talk about not eating past a certain time at night or no carbs late at night, but science doesn’t back those claims up. Nor does my personal experience. So experiment and figure out what makes you feel your best!

One of the big ones that is in my control, and the one that seems to have the greatest impact, is what and whether I eat just before bed. Especially when my body is feeling run down. Given that I predominantly partake in high intensity exercise (although I’ve been toning that down), carbs before bed are really calming to my body and I fall asleep much more quickly. This usually comes in the form of a bowl of cereal made with chocolate almond milk👌🏻 . This is especially true on days when I workout, such as yesterday. While laying in bed, my heart rate was elevated, and while my body was tired, I felt completely wired. I decided to get up and have that bowl of cereal, and sure enough, I was asleep within 5 minutes! . People often talk about not eating past a certain time at night or no carbs late at night, but science doesn’t back those claims up. Nor does my personal experience. So experiment and figure out what makes you feel your best!

- queen village face mask (my new favorite) packed with activated charcoal to extract the bad stuff, colloidal oatmeal to soothe, and aloe vera for hydration
- washington square botanical steam, my favorite aroma to inhale, and perfect for opening stubborn pores like mine...or for tuning out the real world, hidden under a towel with your eyes closed and spotify playing in the background (...just me?)

And let’s be real, to have abs your eating doesn’t just need to be good, it needs to be ON POINT. & that’s exactly what this does for me 👌🏻 I’m ready to crush the next 3 months and have the best body I’ve EVER HAD for my trip to Mexico in April 👙 anyone else ready to start working on their spring break bods?? 💌📲 you know where to find me!

The sponges I had been purchasing for the last year were made of plant based materials with no dyes or glue for composting, but they were still wrapped in plastic packaging.😩 So I finally made the swap to this dish brush. It’s made of all natural materials with replaceable and compostable heads that can be purchased through @packagefreeshop

A friend on my wellness account commented on my birthday photo of Amelia and said that when your babies are born, it’s like you are born all over again too. Isn’t that the most honest, truest thing you’ve ever heard? It’s the best way to describe becoming a mother🙌🏻 •
