Photo @hammond_robin for @witness_change. On December 10 every year we celebrate Human Rights Day. There is arguably no larger group systematically denied their human rights than those living with mental health problems. That’s why I started @OneDayInMyWorld, so that people living with mental health issues have a chance to be seen, heard and valued.
In this picture a female patient at a mental health Centre in Puntland, Somalia tries to escape.
Forcible restraint and/or incarceration of people living with mental health problems is common around the world. It is often done, it is claimed, for the benefit of the ‘patient,’ but few make any sort of recovery when they have their liberty taken from them. In fact, most get worse.
The World Health Organisation says that in the last decade 90% of the treated patients it surveyed in Somalia were subjected at least once in their lifetime to chaining. Chaining patients is seen as an alternative medication, which not only leaves the patients stigmatized but also causes physical injuries. Some of the chained patients end up committing suicide. The person is usually chained not only during the ‘acute crisis’ but throughout his or her life.
Incarceration and restraining is not unique to Somalia. This fundamental breach of the Universal Declaration of Human RIghts of this vulnerable and neglected group happens all over the world yet, for some reason, is ignored.

Photo @hammond_robin for @witness_change. Today is Human Rights Day. There is arguably no larger group systematically denied their human rights than those living with mental health problems. That’s why I started @OneDayInMyWorld, so that people living with mental health issues have a chance to be seen, heard and valued.
I came across this young man in the compound of Native Doctor Lekwe Deezia in The Niger Delta, Nigeria. The ‘Doctor' claims to heal mental illness through the power of prayer and traditional herbal medicines. While receiving treatment, which can sometimes take months, his patients are chained to trees in his courtyard. They are not given shelter or protection from the elements. They are terrified of the doctor. Away from him, as can be seen here, the patients beg me for food. They say they are only fed once a day, sometimes only once every 3 days. I fed the men I found there and left intending to go to the police. My guide, who worked for a local NGO, promised we would do just that. On the way out though, he explained that going to the police would be dangerous for us, as the ‘Doctor’ was a powerful man. And likely not lead to the young men I’d seen receiving any help.
I'm dedicated to making a positive impact with my work, but at times like this, that idealism seems naive.

Sometimes I spoke disorderly. But since I'm having the treatment, I’m fine… The center has helped me with treatments. When I had no medication, it really bothered me. But now that I take it, I feel myself changing. I could not even work before treatment. Now I work well without problem from morning until evening.” 29 year old Lamboni Laré, a mechanic, lives with a mental health problem and attends Centre de Santé Mentale, in Dapaong, northern Togo.

A parade celebrating the 50th anniversary since the start of General Command (GC) a Palestinian resistance organization aligned to Hizbollah, The Syrian Regime, and Iran. Beddawi Refugee Camp is located approximately 5 km north of the Lebanese city of Tripoli. It was established as a Palestinan camp in 1952 after Palestinians were expelled in 1948 from their homeland. Beddawi grew into a camp of approximately 16,000 people. In 2007 an Islamic extremist group from inside the nearby Palestinian camp of Nahr-el Barad attacked the Lebanese army. In retaliation the Lebanese army attacked Nahr-el Barad destroying much of the camp and displacing the entire population of 40,000. Many of these people moved to Beddawi Refugee Camp creating severe overcrowding. Many people hosted by families that were already living there. Some moved into schools which had to stop operating. The interruption caused an already high stress environment to become even more stressful. In 2012, after the beginning of the fighting in Syria (in 2011), the Palestinian refugees based in Syria started to enter Lebanon. At least 5000 Palestinians from Syria settled in Baddawi refugee camp. Before 2007 there were on average one family per house. Now multiple families can live in one house. Beddawi Refugee Camp, Lebanon. April 2015.

It’s hard to believe that in the world we live in today, that there are some cultures that follow inhumane practices such as chaining people with mental health issues to a tree outside of a church in hopes that prayer will heal them. 💔 Kudos to the photographer for starting a campaign to bring awareness and working with human rights organizations to put an end to such horrors. #Repost @thephotosociety (@get_repost)

Photo by @hammond_robin for @witnesschange “When we came here, I could not even approach him, because he would have hit me. But now with the help of men of God who prayed for him here, I see that he is better” said Sankpel Bédagou (right) of her son Lare (left). They agreed to tell their story for my new campaign on mental health #InMyWorld. Lare is usually chained to a tree inside the grounds of a church in the region of Bokiccenag in northern Togo where I met them. I saw 15 other adults living with mental health problems chained to trees or posts around the church while they waited to be cured through prayer. Some had been there, chained, for more than a year. Lare, like the others, was brought to the church to be healed. People come to the Church to pray for the resolution of problems ranging from financial difficulties to severe illnesses. In many parts of the world mental health problems are perceived to be spiritual in nature, so spiritual remedies are sought. In many cases chains are used to immobilise while the healing is taking place. All over the world the freedom of movement is a human right often denied to people with mental health issues.
#InMyWorld is my new campaign designed to expose the challenges faced by people living with mental health issues and give them the chance to be seen, heard and valued. This first phase of the campaign was created in collaboration with @handicap_international as part of Witness Change's work on global mental health. @witness_change is a nonprofit that aims to end human rights violations for marginalized communities through visual storytelling. #Repost  @thephotosociety (@get_repost) ・・・ Photo by @hammond_robin for @witnesschange “When we came here, I could not even approach him, because he would have hit me. But now with the help of men of God who prayed for him here, I see that he is better” said Sankpel Bédagou (right) of her son Lare (left). They agreed to tell their story for my new campaign on mental health #InMyWorld . #12 BUTTERFLIES

I was taken to a butterfly house when I was a kid and bought this book. I spent the rest of the year pouring over the different colours, the different shapes - I drew them non-stop, and knew all the names. I can see why Hirst used them in his artwork. #studiostarling #designstudio #homeware #designlife #design #mydesign #productdesign #instadesign #brighton #bespokedesign #myview #designinspirations #designideas #everythingisart #seeingbeauty #inmyworld #beautifuleveryday #inspired #whatinspiresme #beautyinanything #myfavouritething #top25 #list #childhood
