Can you become still? We are used to constant activity and noise that it is difficult to become quiet. Every minute of our day has to be filled, every gap in a conversation, quietness, replaced with music....let me tell you, of course it is not wrong to listen to music or to be busy...but it becomes problematic if we cannot enjoy silence- quietness. Try this: sit down in a comfortable warm place- maybe your yard, balcony, park, the beach- somewhere beautiful and try to do "nothing". Then watch what thoughts are coming to your mind. Maybe you have the urge to look at your phone, put on some music...maybe your thoughts drift to your "to do list", the past or future. Maybe you feel like you are wasting your time and feel like doing something. Resist and breathe. Stay at the place, at the moment you are in- in the presence. And even if it seems like you are not doing anything, you actually are. Become aware: you are listening with your ears (a skill that has to be learned again), you are watching the things around you, you are breathing, feeling- maybe the warmth of the sun or the wind on your skin....practice for at least 5 minutes...and if you are so worried that you are doing "nothing" so long and miss the 5 minute mark, then set yourself a timer and take that worry away! The sitting in silence will help you to ground yourself, calm, focus, teach you to listen and to enjoy the moment. It is the first step towards learning meditation. In meditation you do even less, than in just sitting, watching and staying present. So it can be your first step and a great way to wind down. Try it! It is healing and you will learn to enjoy silent moments. Your body and mind needs the rest!
