Chinese Medicine Physiology and Circadian Rhythm

According  to  Deke  Kendall  in  his  book  The  Dao  of  Chinese  Medicine, the endocrine gland associated with the Wood Element is the pineal gland. 
Functional activities in the liver, like the breakdown and storage of carbs, fats and protein are influenced by natural cycles in the body. Many metabolic activities in the liver are inhibited at night and then reactivated the next morning by daylight.

These events are now known to be controlled by melatonin, the hormone produced by the pineal gland that is made from central serotonin.

Regarding circadian rhythms and the pineal gland, melatonin is made from serotonin through a metabolic process called methylation.  Light exposure to the retina in the eye alters the amount of serotonin that is metabolized into melatonin. 
Melatonin is thought to regulate sleep, but it is not known exactly how.  It is known to be linked to the circadian sleep rhythms (your body’s natural rhythms). This is particularly interesting when thinking in terms of Chinese medical physiology and the Wood phase.

In Chinese medicine,  the liver (main organ of Wood) is thought be the body’s general and is responsible for various movements and coordination of various processes. And melatonin certainly fits this description perfectly. Also when we look at five phase interactions we also see interesting parralells.

The Wood phase is the child of the Water phase and cortisol and melatonin have a very close relationship. Melatonin mirrors coritsol in that it is highest at night and low during the day (whereas cortisol is normally low at night and highest during the morning and it gradually diminishes throughout the day). The pineal gland sets the body's internal clock based on light. The liver's sense organ is the eyes; perhaps that is the connection.

In addition, we know that cortisol is anti-inflammatory and some research has indicated that melatonin is pro-inflammatory and actually cause flare ups of autoimmunity in some patients in the middle of the night (especially those with rheumatoid arthritis). It does help regulate sleep and help tell your body it is time to go to sleep. Melatonin is best for those who do shift work or who experience jet lag.

⚡️Phosphatidylserine is one supplement that many people have probably not heard of. It is a fat-soluble compound that contributes to cognitive functioning and also helps in lowering cortisol. Helping to balance cortisol levels is where it can really benefit with sleep. For those who feel like their mind is always racing while lying in bed, this may be a good on to give a try.

🍒Tart cherry juice is one I just came across recently from an episode with Dr. Amy Bender on the @dannylennon_sigmanutrition podcast. She discussed how research shows benefits specifically in people suffering with insomnia. Tart cherry juice helps increase the production of melatonin and can also reduce inflammation which can aid in sleep especially in athletes.

🌿Magnesium is another one that has shown some benefits but more research needs to be done. Most of the people who see benefits in sleep aid or relaxation are those that have a magnesium deficiency. It is also combined in the product ZMA which has shown promise for sleep especially in athletes to aid in recovery.

Starting this week, I decided to start taking #melatonin to help me be a little bit more efficient with my sleep (my current favorite #lifehack). I’m pretty serious about my sleep & am known for waking up at 4am to start my days, which by the way, is a normalcy I’m trying to get back to starting today. I intend to use melatonin on days that I take rest days from exercise or whenever I know my body needs a little help in normalizing a sleeping pattern. I purchased a bottle with the highest dosage from Whole Foods (10mg), but read an article the other day that I’m only supposed to be taking 0.3-1mg per night. No wonder why I’ve been so chill this whole week! 😂

Hopefully you’ve all been working on your melatonin production in your eyes by watching the sunrise every day. But here’s another issue. What Does the Pineal Gland Do?
How you think and feel every day depends on the pineal gland. As the producer of the hormone #melatonin, the quality and duration of your sleep relies on how well it produces this hormone. This tiny organ regulates your daily and seasonal circadian rhythms, the sleep-wake patterns that determine your hormone levels, stress levels, and physical performance.

1. Get Out and Into the Sun
Sun exposure kick starts the pineal gland and stimulates the mind. Any type of light exposure, either directly or indirectly, activates the pineal gland, prompting it to produce serotonin; the neurotransmitter responsible for mood and energy levels. This is why it’s crucial to avoid light after the sun goes down, because you need your pineal gland to produce melatonin and suppress serotonin. This process can only be accomplished by reducing light from electronics and lightbulbs as much as possible.

2. Sleep in Complete Darkness
A dark environment ensures your pineal gland produces enough melatonin to ensure good, restful sleep. Make sure you avoid backlit devices like  phones, tablets, computer monitors, or TV right before bed. The lighting of these devices stimulates serotonin production, tricking your pineal gland into thinking it’s daytime, confusing your wake/sleep cycle.

3. Sun Gazing
Sun gazing is perhaps one of the most controversial exercises you can do to activate the pineal gland. Here’s the basics of the practice: within the first 15 minutes of sunlight at the beginning of the day and then the final 15 minutes of sunlight at the end of the day, you gaze into the sun for a couple of seconds, but only a couple of seconds.
