I've been doing a lot of reading lately and gone through 3 books this month. They are mostly to do with ego. This week I was faced with 3 situations where my ego was "challenged".
Situation 1: I got a burrito at Paddington station from their burrito bar and the woman who served me was miserable, she hardly looked up at me when asking what I wanted, didn't answer when I asked how she was, didn't say thank you when I gave her the money or tell me to have a nice day in return. After her initial rudeness I thought about not saying 'have a nice day' as I left. But why should I do that? Did I go to the burrito bar to have a chat? No. Should the fact she didn't say 'have a nice day', stop me from being polite? No. Did she give me a burrito and therefor fulfil the need that I went there to fulfil? Yes. So why do I feel entitled, why do I believe I deserve somebody to THANK ME for giving them some money so I could get some food. When you say it like that it sounds so strange.
Situation 2: I had plans to meet somebody for a catch up after a photoshoot. We hadn't planned a time and when I told them my shoot would finish at 8pm they said "let's just rearrange as I have work tomorrow and I don't want to be out late". At first I thought to myself "well that's a bit rude, changing plans last minute, I warned them it would be the evening..." and then I caught myself, or rather I caught my ego. Yeah, it will be late when they get back. That is a fact, not an offence. That feeling, the one that tells me I'm somehow inadequate because they wanted to rearrange, disappeared in a second.
Situation 3: I post a lot on my Instagram story and people are always replying to the posts. One person apparently didn't like my selfie and their response was "yeah well your looks will fade, then what will you have" and I felt hurt, insulted, how dare they! But actually they were right, and they were wrong. My looks will fade. Just because my looks will fade, doesn't mean my value will alter. If you associate your being with something physical, when you loose that thing you will feel less. But our being isn't defined by our looks, remember your worth. #beautyisontheinside
