Functional Friday 😃💪🏻: I'm determined to improve my shoulder range of motion so practiced hanging partway through #skinthecat 🐱. This freaks me out due to my poppy left shoulder, but I did not experience any pain - yay ! #happyhealthyshoulders

Remember the Tin Man from Wizard of Oz? What happened when he got rained on, rusted, and stopped moving? He needed an oil can!! Then he gently lubricated his joints before busting those dance moves like a new machine. If he tried to dance without priming the joints for movement... something would have broken. Right? Human bodies aren't much different. We don't rust, no, but we're immobile for a huge part of the the day the we wonder why things hurt when we demand that they perform. How dare they!!! 🙃
My point is, it's not necessarily what you DO that causes back pain... it's probably more about what you DON'T DO that's the problem.
Is your core strong? Is your posterior chain (aka booty and hamstrings) strong? Do you decompress your spine? Do you mobilize with spinal twists? Do you stretch your hamstrings and hip flexors? Also, how strong are your hips? Are they stable? ... Do you go for a WALK ever? If your back hurts that bad, I bet you don't. 🐸☕️
Guess what? For us meat-covered skeletons, MOTION IS LOTION! These things are paramount in the treatment and prevention of lower back pain. There's so much we know about lower back pain now that people really shouldn't and don't have to suffer. Discs heal. Inflammation can be treated. Stabilization can occur. Proper actions can reduce symptoms and prevent further damage.
Nevermind the "are you getting massages" piece because of course massages help decrease pain and improve mobility and they feel fantastic... that's a given. But nobody can move you more than you do. #SELFCARE is what's up. That's where freedom lies.

Reflect, pray, meditate, write, sing, dance, move, spend time in nature or whatever it is that allows you to reconnect with your soul. It's difficult to stick to these types of practices because they just don't seem as "important" as the 'really' important things that we have to complete each day. But when you give your 'self' just a small daily dose of attention, it really does help the rest of the day to make a bit more sense. And it's never too late to squeeze it in... and tomorrow is another day to start a new habit... and beating up on yourself for getting off track or not making the time today is counterproductive - so don't even go there with your thoughts 😉 #bekind to and patient with yourself and the time will unfold for the taking. Working towards a pull up at tonight's Movement class. This may not look like much but for me having this level of movement available to me is incredible after a car crash last year injured both my neck and shoulders. This work tonight is the result of 1 year of rehabilitation doing Pilates and more recently intensive movement classes focusing on alternating between strength and flexibility training - a few weeks ago simply hanging from the bar made me feel sick the pain in my shoulders was so intense- I never thought I could lift my body weight- so to get here tonight is just ✨✨ I'm finally feeling like I'm getting full control of my body back. The one thing that I have learned is you need to move to recover. I'm crediting @izzyachesoo for the phrase "medicine movement." It's incredibly accurate description of what's going on with modern medicine and yoga. I recently wrote a paper on research I conducted, and found more and more doctors are recognizing and prescribing yoga as a way to regain health in injured joints and muscles. I can tell you that a cross body stretch requiring core strength for balance would have never been possible 2 years ago, but here I am doing the damn thing. Here's to more openness on discussing medicine versus strength building.
