The Narrow House is a new private house which backs onto the south coast in Hove. The thin building, which was previously occupied by a garage, needed a specialised super-slim structure in order to maximise the available space and to accommodate the code minimum widths for the required staircase, corridor and car parking space at ground level. Furthermore, the three storey tall structure needed to function as a home for the residents and their extensive collection of art. Working with Sanei Hopkins Architects, Elliott Wood developed an RC framed structural strategy utilising portalised blade columns with concrete beamstrips and slabs. The blade columns were designed to be pre-cast on site and lifted into position to minimise the column widths. The beamstrips were cast with upstands (which were concealed within the floor finishes) to create a level soffit. The entire concrete structure was architecturally exposed to create an art gallery style minimalist aesthetic as well as to save precious centimetres through eliminating the finishes. The exposed RC frame is infilled with timber stud walls and flush mounted stainless steel mesh cassettes to allow the clients to rearrange their artwork easily.
The Narrow House won the 2016 RIBA South East Region Award. 🏆
4/30 cities I have visited in #europe - beautiful Amsterdam! It is hard to describe such a wonderful city in just a few words. I have had incredible time there at #2009 when my Mum and I went to visit her friend @gogalenting who lives there. Everythig is tall and skinny in Amsterdam - from houses to people 😁 We spent night in #hilton hotel there and visited room where John Lennon and Yoko Ono were staying during their honeymoon. I visited house of Anna Frank - real place where she was writing her diary. Now it is turned into museum and it was very emotional to go there and see everything as it was during war when Anna lived there. Also, I found cat hotel on water! 😻 That's not real hotel, they have cats who don't have home and people can come, play with #cats , feed them and even take one. I almost did that 😂 I loved how everybody is driving bike in #amsterdam - that is definitely something I could get used to!😊 On last pic I am in front of smallest house in Amsterdam - according to travel guide. It is definitely the most narrow house I have ever seen - the whole house is wide as the front door 🙃🌷🚲💛 #netherlands#travel#tbt#city#travelpast#traveljunkie#travelblogger#instatravel#johnlennon#yokoono#hiltonamsterdam#annafrank#narrowhouse#lovethiscity
When you stumble upon a building that makes you wonder how it's possible to stay standing. This is the thin edge of the wedge as the buildings further up the street are of a normal size. On doing a Google search I've learnt that in 2016 a one bed studio apartment sold for £980k 😱. #lynnny_b2017 -256 #southkensington#narrowhouse#london#walkabout#sunday
