So sitting out from the clinic & from being active has really made me think of how important our profession is. Whether it’s being a RMT, physio, chiro, doctor, osteopath, & personal trainer; our 🌱health, movement, & function is vital to our quality of life
.
I only have this groin injury💥 (hip flexor, pectineus give or take), which feels awful to me, so I can’t fathom the discomfort others are in with chronic pain with other severe injuries & disabilities
.
It’s amazing how those who are in months or years of pain stay positive, & those that are gloomy, I can understand & empathize why
.
I’ll make this an experience I can learn lots from & put it towards helping all my clients more than I can. I value everyone’s energy, functionality, & health
.

Wrist Pain When Pressing or Curling 😬

A common complaint we get from our weight lifting clients its pain in the wrist from either pressing (usually barbell bench press) or curling (usually barbell bicep curls).🏋
.
Pain of this nature may not seem so bad at first, but can progress to become a serious problem. In the worst case you may even tear your TFCC (triangular fibrocartilage complex) a cartilage structure in your wrist that is vital for normal wrist mechanics. It supports and cushions the wrist bones, and when damaged can cause chronic pain and dysfunction. 😱

How to FIX the wrist pain and PREVENT further damage? 💪
.
1️⃣ Keep your wrist in neutral when pressing (not flexed or extended)
.
2️⃣ Adjust your grip width so both forearms are vertical
.
3️⃣ Mix things up; Stop using the barbell so damn much! (swap it out for dumbbells, kettlebells, powerbands, bodyweight exercises etc.)
.
If this doesn’t fix the problem then seek the advice of a professional. 🤓 A simple point to remember: if something is hurting, then STOP doing it, because you definitely aren’t doing it right! ⚡

Hamstring strains commonly happen when there is an excessive force placed across the muscle, typically seen with sprinting, sudden start/stopping motions, jumping, hurdling, and heavy lifting. .

During running a strain occurs during the eccentric contraction of the muscle, or when the hamstring elongates during the late swing phase (phase when you are swinging your leg forward and the knee straightens and reach out with the foot up to right before the foot touches the ground).

Unfortunately,  there is a high injury reoccurrence rate that averages 31% over a sport season with the highest likelihood within the first 2 weeks of return to sport.

For those who have a history of hamstring strains, yes you have target the muscles that lead@to hamstring overwork such as the glutes, but you may need to work the muscle in an elongated position vs. shortening. .

D1️⃣ & D2️⃣ shoulder patterns have been around for a long time. For those of you that are not familiar with it, Here is a little background ⤵️

D1️⃣ & D2️⃣ patterns are part of Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation (PNF) concepts. In short, the goal of using PNF patterns is to improve the neuromuscular system’s ability to coordinate movement. PNF shoulder patterns are combined movement patterns in all three planes of motion.

We will describe the patterns in terms of end position. D1️⃣ (Diagonal 1️⃣) shoulder flexion is flexion, adduction, external rotation. D1️⃣ extension is extension, abduction, internal rotation. Easy way to remember ➡️ grabbing and buckling a seatbelt.

D2️⃣ (Diagonal 2️⃣) shoulder flexion is flexion, abduction, external rotation. 2️⃣ extension is extension, adduction, internal rotation. Easy way to remember ➡️ throwing a baseball.

Here are two exercises demonstrating some PNF shoulder patterns. The first video demonstrates concentric/eccentric D2️⃣ flexion. The second video demonstrates a variation of concentric D2️⃣ flexion and D1️⃣ extension.

For example, requirements vary depending on energy availability ie. increase when in a deficit & vice versa (Mero et al 2010) with those extremely active and/or in a deficit often requiring higher intakes of 2-3g/kg to preserve LBM (Helms et al 2013).
