To many adventurers, a high quality knife is the most valuable tool. In the hands of a skilled survivalist, it can have almost unlimited applications. One aspect to keep in mind when accessing a survival knife is the Rockwell hardness. There are a few Rockwell scales, but the one used for knives is normally abbreviated as HRc which is normally within the range of 54-59. This number indicates the hardness of the steel. A harder steel is useful when edge retention is necessary, but this makes the steel slightly more brittle and susceptible to chipping or cracking from heavy use. On the other hand, a lower Rockwell hardness will indicate a softer steel which will be less effective at holding an edge out in the field, but will offer better durability and can withstand more abuse. We hope this post offered something of value to you, if so follow @elementsurvival for similar content! Tag someone who could use more insight on the Rockwell scale!
Possessing adept navigation skills can be a real lifesaver in an emergency. For this reason, we believe it’s important to debunk a common myth in the survival world that moss grows on the north side of trees. While moss can grow on the north side of trees, this is largely due to the geographic location of the tree. Moss is a very simple plant that requires shade to maintain enough moisture to survive. Since the sun’s rays strike the Earth near the equator, a shadow will be cast on the north side of trees in the northern hemisphere and in the southern hemisphere the shadow will be one the south side of the trees. Since the presence of moss is largely contingent on the location of shade on a tree, it is generally not best practice to attempt to determine the direction you are facing based on the location of the moss on a tree. We hope you learned something new from this post. If so follow @elementsurvival for more! Tag someone who still believes moss only grows on the north side of trees!
Being able to start a fire without matches is one of the most important skills to possess in a survival situation. There are two different types of fire starting techniques: friction based and lens based. Friction based techniques involve fast movement between two objects to generate enough heat to ignite a pile of tinder or dry brush. Lens based techniques focus the rays of light from the sun into one small point to create focal point. Lens techniques are generally easier to execute, but require materials that are less readily available out in the wilderness. The most well known friction techniques are the hand drill and the bow drill. Both features a 2 foot long stick called the spindle and the fireboard which is a flat piece of wood that must be completely dry. The hand drill requires one to quickly rub their hands back and forth and then move their hands down the length of the spindle and then start again at the top. The bow drill is a similar concept, but features a bow constructed from a curved piece of wood and a piece of string or paracord wound around the spindle which allows you to more efficiently spin the spindle and create enough friction to form an ember. Lens based techniques are more straightforward and can be done with a variety of tools. Most commonly, a magnifying glass is used, but in a pinch binoculars, reading glasses, balloons, and even well shaped pieces of ice can be held a few inches away from the tinder focus enough heat to start a fire. Having the perfect shelter can be the deciding factor on whether or not you have a good night’s sleep. That’s why is absolutely necessary to plan ahead and know how to pick the right tent for your needs. The first thing you should consider when picking a tent is how many occupants you will have sleeping in it for the majority of the days of your trip. With this in mind, it’s also important to figure out the wide of the trails and campgrounds you will make camp in to ensure you have room to fit the tent comfortably. Another crucial component of picking tents is the weight. Usually, a high quality tent will never exceed 3 pounds per person it is made to house. The seams and stitching on the tent should of the folded, double stitch variety to ensure maximum durability out in the field. Finally, many tents may come with a rainfly or vestibule for extra storage space. Your specific needs may or may not call for these extra features so it’s important to decide whether it will be worth carrying the extra weight with you. A woman died and 15 people were injured when a fire broke out on a shuttle boat taking passengers to a casino boat near New Port Richey, Florida, north of Tampa.
The female passenger, 42, died at 10:42 pm on Sunday at the Bayonet Point Regional Medical Center where she was being treated for her injuries, according to Kevin Doll, Pasco County Sheriff's Office spokesman.
The extent of her injuries or the cause of death were not released.
There were 50 people on board when the fire started Sunday about half a mile from shore, said Shawn Whited, the chief of the fire division for Pasco County. Fire department officials said the fire likely started in the engine room and spread quickly.
Officials said the boat's captain saved lives because he turned the boat around when he noticed the flames, managing to get closer to shore and making it easier for first responders to reach those in the water. 'Absolutely frigid'
The injuries included smoke inhalation and chest pains, fire department Deputy Chief Andrew Fossa said. All those aboard were accounted for, the Coast Guard said Sunday evening.
Officer Jason Zimmerman of the New Port Richey Police Department said some of the older passengers were face down in the water when he reached them. "If we didn't show up at the time we did, there were going to be serious consequences," Zimmerman said.
The 59-degree water combined with Gulf breezes created a risk of hypothermia for the passengers, emergency officials said.
"They were absolutely frigid when they got out of there," Fossa said.
The first 911 call about the fire came in around 4:15 p.m., CNN affiliate WFTS reported. The boat was still burning about two hours later.
The fire broke out near waterfront homes, and passengers who jumped out and swam to shore ended up in backyards, a witness, who gave her name only as Hala, told WFTS.
One man shot video of the burning boat as it neared the shore.
"We called 911 as soon as possible and we thought we were witnessing a tragedy happen. It was really hard to watch but we were glad they were close to shore and our whole neighborhood came together to pass blankets and whatever care they needed," Credit @cnn
