Active Technique: Downward Dog

We introduced a passive mobility technique last week with the use of a lacrosse ball to get after some of that tight tissue in our upper back/shoulders, today, we take it a step further and provide an active technique to follow that up. It is important to follow up passive mobility techniques with active exercises. Majority of passive techniques implemented provide short term relief or improvements to mobility restrictions, which is why it’s important to always follow them up with an exercise that will have the athlete actively moving the joints and muscles to their end range. The downward dog is an excellent active mobility exercise for hitting the end range shoulder flexion and thoracic extension many of us lack.

Over 5 months since my spine surgery now. Progress is amazing even though I still haven’t healed properly, it will take 6-12 months to heal fully. 
There are good and bad days but the bad days are coming more and more seldom. 
Next milestone is running again, hopefully within 3 weeks! Super excited!!! 🤗

Hanging Retractions are an excellent way to teach the body how to stabilize the shoulder blades. This WILL lead to greater mid-back activation, muscular development AND strength. Shoot for 3 sets of 6-8 Retractions with a 2 second pause at the peak retracted position. Do these AFTER your t-spine mobility drills to maximize the effectiveness.

Today is my first day back to squatting, back to religious food tracking, and some very new things in my program. As powerlifters, we can never truly grow until we realize there is always room to grow and more to learn. This may be a tedious recovery for me, but I'm determined to come into the Arnold with no hip pain and a strong finish. A DIFFERENT WAY TO RELIEVE TIGHTNESS

When you feel tight, there are 2 possible scenarios.
🔹️You are actually tight.
🔹️You aren't tight but have a sensation of tightness
.
Determining which one it is comes from testing your flexibility. If you find you actually are tight, employ drills to fix that. That could be static stretching, dynamic stretching, PNF, or even loaded movement.

If you just feel tight, you would really be wasting your time with stretching. Because often the reason for that sensation is weakness. The work capacity of the muscle is nearing or has reached its threshold. It's like how your calves don't always feel tight before a run but often do afterwards. They didn't get tighter. They just got worked and are letting you know about it.
.
So how do we solve this issue? We increase the work capacity! By raising that ceiling, the muscle can do more work before it yells at you. That's why in the clinic we make sure to test everyone and get a clear picture of what we're dealing with. In order to get the desired results, you have to use the right tool.
.
This is an example of how we can increase the work capacity of the hip flexor. It also has the added benefit of creating an isometric hold in the muscle, which can decrease perceived tightness itself. So we get a 2 for 1 special. Try a few sets of 6 to 10 per side with a 3 count hold per rep and improve those hip flexors.

Really cool bit of kit I've been wanting to try for a while and today I gave it ago.... Its an #ifit #freemotion Le Tour de France bike. You can select different stages of the race and follow each stage via the video on the screen. 💪The really cool part💪 is that you have gears like a road bike on the handlebars and the gradient of the bike changes as you go up and down hill which effects your speed and resistance. 
Its like your cycling outside which I really liked about this bike plus I sweated way more then I normally would.

Some clean bent over single arm rows with 45 k d/bs...💪🏽 when performing this exercise think forward then back rather then straight up and straight down.. your shoulder blades want to retract and depress remember 👌🏻. I like to use the belt more for core feedback so don't have it suffocating you .. you should be able to contract your abs out against the belt 👍
This exercise performed correctly is a monster for developing a great back 🙌🏻

This is a common core exercises, but it is also a great closed chain shoulder #stability exercise! 
Start in a plank position, then place your hand on the shoulder you want to #strengthen. 
Slowly rotate your #body up so that you are perpendicular to the floor. Then slowly rotate back so you are back to parallel. 
The slower you move through this #exercise, the more your rotator cuff will have to stabilize the #shoulder.
