- Aziz Qomarul Firdaus

@Regrann from @sciencetechfuture - NEW: 91 subglacial volcanoes have been discovered under the icy surface of west Antarctica.
The ice sheets that cover west Antarctica in the Southern Hemisphere have recently been scanned through radar by researchers to show almost 100 new volcanoes. It is currently not known if they are dormant or active, however if they are the latter this causes additional problems for Antarctic ice sheets that are already melting due to global warming.
Robert Bingham, from the university of Edinburgh in the U.K. made this statement: "if they erupted, they would create water beneath the ice, that would make the ice above flow faster, so it would have the potential to increase the losses of ice we're already seeing."
The researchers utilised existing data of the west Antarctic ice sheet called Bedmap2 to identify the volcanoes, which is a collection of ground-penetrating radar scans taken by aeroplanes or by vehicles above the surface.
The scan showed colonial structures 4km beneath the ice to be possible volcanoes. Never before in the past had the data been 'interrogated' for shapes, which is why this discovery has just been made. The researchers then checked to see if the cones discovered aligned with other data sourced from satellite imagery, which includes minute deformations of the surface directly above the potential volcanoes.
After finding 180 cones and discounting 50, the team decided that there was 138 legitimate colonial structures beneath the surface, as 47 of these were previously discovered volcanoes this meant that the team has discovered 91 new subglacial volcanoes. These volcanoes are all between 100 and 3850 metres, with almost s third being over 1km tall.
The research team now plan to use equipment to calculate the activity of these volcanoes, and to also use a similar process on the neighbouring Ross ice shelf to find more potential subglacial volcanoes, which if discovered would make the West Antarctic ice sheets one of the world largest volcanic systems.
Environmental sciences exist in a non-closed system. Variability in one field can be extreme. The variability caused by nature has made it difficult to implement artificial intelligence. However, to keep progress, the utilization of AI is necessary.
Today in a changing climate mixed with economic and social issues, our ability to supply food at an exponential rate is difficult. We must be able to maximize resources and minimize our destruction of precious habitats.
Current methods take aim at improving recommendations to improve yields and monitoring plant health. Using AI must come to the forefront in how we look to address soils and agriculture. What are your thoughts on how to use #AI in soil science?

I'm sure you've seen the images floating around the Internet showing what 5lbs of fat vs. 5lbs of muscle looks like. The replicas typically shown are a giant blob of fat next to a tiny mound of muscle, and you're inevitably left believing that 5lbs of fat takes up 5x more space than 5lbs of muscle. .
This is a myth! 🚫In actuality, the density of mammalian skeletal muscle tissue is 1.06kg/L, while that of adipose tissue is 0.9196kg/L. In other words, fat only takes up 15% more space than muscle. .
So 5lbs of fat weighs the same as 5lbs of muscle - obviously! But muscle is only slighter more dense than fat. .
How did this misconception arise? I do not know, but I surmise that some sleazy marketer fabricated the idea to sell a product or service by dramatizing the visual effects of getting into shape. 🤷🏽♂️Whatever the case, this individual clearly never chased down the science like I did. Unfortunately, these images are so common nowadays that they aren't questioned and are passed along as fact. Exaggeration is never a good idea; people deserve the truth. 🙌🏽

Bom trabalho, meninos e meninas!!!Our students took part in a debate in which they had to speak up the arguments if they agree on having wild animals as pets! Great job, girls and boys! #science#letters#englishlanguagearts#trulybilingual#bilingualeducation#atenasbilingualschool

“There is no strict answer to what the difference is between scientific and artistic research. Both science and art work with problems, but have different goals. Definitive knowledge, which is the goal of scientific research, would be a dangerous notion in art. Art creates pluralistic objects that allow for various responses to coexist for at least some time. That is why, I think the goal of artistic research is to obtain a temporal consistency of such pluralities. The best art is always a bit uncertain, but in a beautiful way, because it opens the possibility for returning and reinterpretation but that is true for science as well. But for science, it is more robust: it is absolute truth unless it’s disproved by somebody else.”
When archaeologists want to learn about the history of an ancient civilization, they dig deeply into the soil, searching for tools and artifacts to complete the story. Scientists who study Earth’s past climates, called paleoclimatologists, take a similar approach. However, instead of digging into the soil, they look for clues about our planet’s climate history by studying coral reefs, digging into ocean and lake floor sediment and drilling deeply into glaciers and ice sheets. The samples they collect from the ice, called ice cores, hold a record of what our planet was like hundreds of thousands of years ago.
But where do ice cores come from, and what do they tell us about climate change? Climate scientist Allegra LeGrande of the NASA Goddard Institute for Space Studies (GISS) and physical scientist Kimberly Casey of the U.S. Geological Survey and Cryospheric Sciences Lab at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center helped answer these questions and more.
