PART TWO - Visuals and how clothes fit - Take full length photos, same time of day, same spot in the house, with minimal going on in the back ground may be a better reflection of progress for you along with trying clothes on you would either love to get back in and feel your best at, or better yet, buy something new as a target to get in to.
A mixture of a few of the above will give you the truest reflection of where you are, but whatever measures or tools you use, stick to the same ones consistently!
Same scales for weight (time of day, position in the house, etc.), same practitioner for callipers, same position of the house for progress pictures, same tape measure, same measurements, etc. – You get the picture!
Only then will you have a true reflection of progress
PART ONE - The dreaded weigh in!! - "Without assessing, you're guessing"
Preventing what can be for some a precursor to a meltdown – How do you assess where you are with weight and fat loss in order to monitor progress?! As with all, it’s important to mention a certain amount of human error comes with all too, but quite simply – What can you do to avoid this and monitor progress?
Skinfold/calliper testing and bioelectrical impedance
Ideally seek out a highly skilled practitioner that frequently uses them!
Bear in mind it’s a method of measure. That is, the likelihood that the number output is a true reflection is unlikely to be a definitive be all and end all. You can however look for trends - Your supposed body fat is 80% (ok an exaggeration and nigh on impossible, especially with a calliper readings) then the next time it's 75%, you're heading in the right direction! A lower number is all you're looking for. If that's the case, bioelectrical impedance scale measurements may have their place too.
Scale weight over time, whether that be daily or weekly is a useful tool for assessing progress if nothing else looking at weekly averages. I’m yet to meet anyone who’s weight isn’t heavily influenced by many different variables – undigested food, last ‘passing’, hydration, how they’ve seasoned their food that week (splashing soy sauce and heavily salting your foods can add a little additional water weight), menstrual cycle, etc. There are so many things that can influence this number that culturally we use to decide whether our endeavours are ultimately a success or failure.
If you have an unhealthy and obsessive relationship with your scale weight, getting in the habit of getting frequent calliper tests will likely result in the same obsession. What’s another option?
Girth measurements with a tape measure. For this I would recommend using one side of your body (limbs) and taking an average of three attempts – All measurements should be taken around the largest part of the muscle belly. Or get the same person to do these for you
