Denims that have a faded, worn appearance have undergone a treatment called stone wash or acid wash (a misleading term as no acid is actually used in the process) to give it that appearance. This is usually done by washing the denims in a chlorine bleach solution with pumice stones in a rotating drum.
As the stones are tossed in the drum together with the denim, they roughen up the fabric and the solution causes it to fade. Besides altering its appearance, this stone washing process also helps to increase the softness and flexibility of denims, which are originally more stiff. Image of apparel by Brooklyn Supply Co
