more semi-secrets - i wear a million layers most of the time, but weekends in my house usually involve just a sports bra while i putsky around with chores. it's been like that for years, and i have no idea why, it just is. i'm caving and pulling on #hverir to go shovel though...ugh ❄️
after i posted earlier this week about my conflicted feels about yoga, i thought back to the period of time that i had my strongest practice, and it was when i was regularly dancing too (fyi, i am not a dancer, i just learned different movement vocabularies as an actor so i could follow choreography). anyone who went through dal's acting program with katherine spent years perfecting the luigi warm-up, and thanks to the fact that i hoard all my old theatre books, i've started doing that again in the mornings to get myself moving again! i have zero interest in weight loss, and actually my body doesn't really do that, it just tones or gets less toned without shifting much in terms of weight or inches. but i do miss the strength i used to have, and i'm not super stoked about the possibility of throwing out my back with all the winter shoveling, so those are my impetus for figuring out some daily movement. (also, health, mobility, blah blah it's important but honestly not that motivating when it's cold outside and you could just hermit inside all winter.) so, that's what i'm doing these days. i'm also thinking i need to make some massage oils and bath teas with my joint herbs. winter is hard on my body, and i live in a 6-8 month winter world, so i gotta figure out something to take better care of this young-ish corpse with old bones 🌿
do you have tips and tricks for treating your body nicer?
Happy Monday dudes 🙌
In around 8 weeks time, I will be starting a residency at @greennotemusic in London, focusing on 1 album per night, across 3 nights, in the month of January.
09th of Jan - Break Your Own Heart
16th of Jan - Esk
24th of Jan - Home State
I'm really excited about it! It's NUTS where life can take you - I always dreamed of a run of shows in London ❤️. Plus it's an opportunity to dip into the past and fully relive some of these old stories and songs that I very rarely get to play live anymore.
Go and grab your tickets from the link in my profile 👆🏻. And if you'd like to come and get cosy with us at all 3 gigs, there are a VERY limited number of discounted early-bird tickets available through a link I just posted to Facebook.
BIG LOVE xo
today's @wovemberwool prompt is wellness = woolness, and i'm kinda glad it landed on #tbt because, ironically, i'm not feeling great today and don't really want to get in front of or behind my camera 🙄 so let's go with this photo that @samsonphotography took of me knitting at the top of the world this summer, near another waterfall in iceland 😘
i always joke that i have no poker face for anything, and actually that extends to my whole body and by further extension to my general health. when i'm very stressed, i get sick. when my anxiety gets too high, i can't keep food down (sort of conveniently i lose my appetite anyway). when i have messed up stress dreams like i did last night, i'm non-functional for the rest of the day. knitting is a key tool for keeping my mental health in check, and i primarily knit with wool (with the occasional other animal or vegetable fibre in there). and wrapping myself in layers of handknits helps me to create cocoons for both calming and warmth. being an emotional creature is a nice way of saying that sometimes my brain fucks me up, which fucks up my physical body, and wool is literally medicine for that. i knit experiences into wearable items, which sometimes means something will never be worn. but it's a necessity that i can't imagine living without 🖤
what about you? what's your definition of wellness, and how do (or do) sheep factor into that for you? 🐑 do you have other tools you use to stay well?
why i love wool: where do i even start? it's an integral part of a healthy ecosystem, it's a sustainable animal resource, it lasts for generations if you care for it properly, it's insulating, it keeps my never-the-right-temperature body from freezing year-round, it's brought me so many friends and life lessons over the years, it's a non-negotiable core part of my career, sheep are cute as hell and also have hilarious personalities, it connects me to people from all over the world with a common language, it's a major tool in keeping my anxiety in check, it's cozy, and it lets me play out my politics in a much more holistic and sustainable manner than anything else ever has. also, it's resulted in me having crazy adventures like this with @samsonphotography, when i knit beside a waterfall in iceland before we hiked all over it with @marshallhaywood 🖤
come talk to me about wool while we hang out surrounded by wool and look at pictures full of wool (and waterfalls) tonight @wolseleywool for the #Ferðaskór book launch 🐑 7-9pm, and there'll be snacks!
i had the most lazy lovely quiet morning, drinking coffee and listening to @marleegrace's last have company podcast and knitting away on my @amirisushop #snowskies cardigan. as @slowfashionoctober winds down to a close, i've decided to combine my inspiration behind the #bekindkal and just knit this sweater for myself until november 1. after that, i can go back to my deadline knitting, but i wanted to actually dedicate some time to knitting for myself for once. i think maybe listening to podcasts in the morning needs to be part of my new routine too - there's something so much more whole about starting the day off with good talks 🖤
i do have more work to do for #everydaymagic today, plus prep for #Ferðaskór 's release party on wednesday and teaching an indigo class @wag_ca's #crafted next weekend. join me for an instagram live video in about half an hour if you want to chat more about any of those things (we'll focus on #everydaymagic but i'm happy to switch up topics). we can also chat about iceland stories, like when @samsonphotography, @marshallhaywood, and i went to the witchcraft museum. personally, i think my #eldfjall shawl was the perfect accessory for that particular trip 🖤 what's your favourite witchy accessory?
next wednesday, i'll be @wolseleywool signing copies of #Ferðaskór and telling stories from iceland 🇮🇸 you can rsvp via the link in my profile, or just pop by between 7-9pm! i'll have extra photos with me, like this cutie patootie we met at the sheep herder's museum in the west fjords 🐑
@samsonphotography is my automatic partner in these adventures. i can't imagine making a new book without him. and because we're kinda ridiculous (aka we really really really like planning ahead), we're already planning book #3 ! actually, we've been loosely planning it for a while, but we're talking more about it now that #Ferðaskór is out in the world (for the most part...i still have some books that need to be shipped). so, in these baby stages of planning, i'm asking for your help. we have a plan, which is maybe a little out there, and i need your help in identifying amazing fibre farms and mills all across canada - every province and territory please! are you a sheep farmer? does your neighbour spin yarn with wolf fur and sled dog fur? do you run a small mill specializing in locally grown fibres? tell me about it! i've got @longwayhomestead, @fermefiolafarm, @hinterland_textiles, @twinoaksfarmfiber, @fleeceandharmony, and @taprootfibrelab on my radar. who else is out there? 🤔
i have two pairs of handshoes i need to photograph soon, and annoyingly i don't have @samsonphotography nearby to shoot them for me like he did with #hraun . who has nice fingers and wants to be my hand model? 😜 (i'm half-serious here...honestly, i don't really like working with other models very often, mostly just because i'm a hermit and photography sessions actually fill me with mild anxiety every time i do them...) 🙄
have you cast on something for the #bekindkal yet? remember, #Ferðaskór projects count for double entries for prizes 😘
hey vancouver, i've got some goodies headed your way courtesy of @baaadannas! five signed copies of #Ferðaskór , mermaid hair and rumpelstiltskin cakes, five of hearts mini sets, and the NEW five of diamonds mini sets! they should arrive sometime next week, so be sure to plan a li'l shopping trip. i've got some schemes for a design using one cake each of mermaid hair and rumpelstiltskin before the end of the year, so now is definitely a good time to treat yourself 😘
anyone who knows me well knows i'm usually wrapped up in a million layers, with several resembling blankets if possible. that's why i love #hestar so much - it's totally like a lap blanket! @samsonphotography has spent years photographing me and my layers. if you'd like to see hestar and the other #Ferðaskór knits in person, come to the official book launch party @wolseleywool on november 1! i'll be there signing books and chatting all about iceland from 7-9pm (it's on a knit night evening, so bring your knitting, especially if you're taking part in the #bekindkal !). there will be food too, so you have no excuse really 🤗
my #ootd today is definitely resembling a pile of blankets, with my secondhand wool ruana and the shawl that inspired hestar, a pashmina i bought from a street vendor in nyc a decade ago. it's well-loved and well-travelled, as all good #slowfashion wardrobes should be 😘
are you knitting anything from #Ferðaskór yet? i'd love to see progress pics! i'm eyeballs deep in paperwork today and then i'm taking the evening off from computers (gasp!), but i'll respond to questions soon!
